Clifford’s Tower is an English Heritage site and was once the central stronghold of York Castle; it enjoys magnificent views over York. It was built by William the Conqueror and played a key role in the control of England surviving flood, siege and fire. Also imprisoned in the tower was the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin!
